What is Radon?
Radon is a colorless, odorless radioactive gas that forms when naturally occurring uranium decays. Radon gas is commonly found in rocks and soil; it enters homes through cracks and other holes in the foundation.
Radon is a radioactive, invisible, tasteless, and odorless natural gas released by the earth when uranium in soil, rock, and water breaks down. When breathed in, radon gives off radiation to the lining of your lungs, damaging cells.
Prolonged exposure to radon levels above four picocuries per liter of air significantly increases the risk of lung cancer, even for nonsmokers. The USEPA considers radon the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States overall, and it is the leading cause among nonsmokers. The only way to find out if you have elevated radon levels in your home is to conduct a simple test.
Radon has been detected in many homes throughout the United States. What’s more, the absence or presence of radon can vary from one house to another, even on the same street!
